Unsolicited Product Review: John Richardson's Past Lives Revealed "Tarot" Deck by Stuart Cassels - Except for a couple of spare Rider Waite Smith decks and one other special exception, I can honestly say that I haven't bought a pack of tarot cards in about 5 years, and a new, sealed pack in at least 8 years. The simple reason being, I honestly believe that, as a rule, there isn't much another design (often ill-conceived and often just released to fill another gap in the market) can offer myself or my clients.

Then, the other day I had the pleasure of meeting John Richardson - an extremely knowledgeable and experienced Tarot Reader and Past Life Guide. John told me about his new "Past Lives Revealed Deck" and I felt there was definitely a valid use for them... so I bought a pack!

They arrived today in the post, and I am extremely impressed. The artwork is beautiful, the cards and the box are printed on a very nice card stock, and although I haven't yet had the opportunity to read with them for a client, I can already tell that these cards will be going into my main tarot reading kit, alongside the RWS decks, and will be used regularly.

So, what do you get? 78 Professionally designed and printed cards in a box: Note: These are not "home made", or run off by a local printing company who have no idea about the needs of readers. They have been printed on a nice quality matt stock, to avoid glare and reflection (the bane of any pro reader's life!) and are the standard size tarot cards - not bridge or poker playing cards.

Unlike a traditional tarot deck of 78 cards, there is no minor arcana set comprising of 4 suits. Instead there are 78 cards which would be more closely associated with the major arcana in a "standard" tarot deck. Each of these represents a character - (or perhaps more accurately a character trait) - or a physical location - (or perhaps at times a mental or physical situation). Each card has obviously been given much thought as to it's title, design, and most importantly the imagery.

If this wasn't enough, each card is clearly numbered from 1 - 78 (offering the opportunity to perhaps delve into a little numerology during the reading) and the name of each card is printed large enough that even in poor lighting conditions and at a larger table, everyone involved in the reading can see. Many designers of tarot, and similar decks should take a lesson from this!

What you don't get with the physical package is a printed book(let) of card meanings. But that is fine! John has provided a downloadable pdf of suggested meanings for those who want it. I suggest that you do get it whether you feel you need it or not, so that you can see where John's thoughts were coming from as he went through the process of producing each card. The truth is that card meanings are often very fluid, and personal, and there is plenty of scope for you to simply interpret the cards in a very relaxed and open minded way.

In truth, an experienced tarot reader and past life guide, should be able to easily use these cards in a very short period of time. There is certainly no need to start learning the new meanings of all 78 cards. For those who have never dipped their toes into PLR, but have read the tarot, this is an excellent introduction to the very interesting and curious world of Past Lives. And for those who are experienced in PLR, but perhaps not using cards for readings, this is an excellent tool that should be carried with you wherever you go.

For PLR readings, the cards will obviously align themselves to certain spreads more than others, and that is fine. Personally, I can see me using these with either a slightly adapted Celtic Cross tarot spread, and my own 8 card spread. Both of these are ideal for the intended use. If you are currently only using simple three card spreads or a 13 card annual revelation spread etc, you owe it to your clients to expand your repertoire to offer them the best possible reading.

I'm also interested in how these cards will "perform" as a fortune telling deck, looking towards the future as well as past lives. Having examined each card, I believe that there is plenty of opportunity for fortune tellers to offer fantastic readings with these cards, and will happily share my experiences with them in that setting, at my first opportunity.

A review wouldn't be complete without discussing price. I won't divulge the exact price here, for the simple reason that I honestly believe that John has set the retail price of this deck far too low, and I could easily see these selling for twice the price he currently has them available at! The amount of thought and work that went into creating these, and the possibilities of these unique cards deserves a higher selling price. So be warned, if you are going to purchase a pack, buy it now whilst they are at the bargain price, and before John realises what he is giving away.

In short - I'd highly recommend these cards to anyone with some experience of PLR or Fortune Telling, and I suspect that thanks to the highly intuitive nature of the designs, this would be an ideal tool for anyone looking to start exploring how to use cards. I will be using these cards myself personally, and will definitely be discussing and recommending them to students at my next training course.
